Our Story

2006

Our plants business is over 100 years old. To enable us to be more sustainable and compete in the early 21st Century, we upgraded to a woodchip heating system for the garden centre and 5.5 acre nursery.

2007

Having installed a 2MW woodchip boiler, we had to create a supply chain to fuel it. We bought 3m softwood logs from local forestry companies to stack and dry in our windy timberyard in Loanhead.

2008

We bought our first woodchipper to enable us to produce woodchip to feed our boiler. We also began showcasing our boiler system and helping other early adopters of biomass boilers, plan their installations.

2009

We used, maintained and fuelled our large biomass system and advised others on how to do similar, so the natural progression for us was to become biomass installers and provide commercial woodchip and chipping services.

2010

We became MCS accredited in June in anticipation of the RHI scheme launch of the following year. This allowed us to install and maintain biomass boilers. We went on to install around 50 commercial boilers around Scotland.

2014

The launch of Domestic RHI saw us installing 300 domestic log and pellet boilers around Scotland. We had a team of installers and engineers who also serviced the units.

2016

We installed two woodchip powered drying floors to assist with woodchip production. This made us more responsive and enabled us to manage stock more efficiently for ourselves and our biomass customers.

2020

Having reduced our commercial woodchip and chipping businesses during Covid, we focussed on drying hardwood logs on our drying floors. The logs produced were very well received and our firewood business began to flourish.

2021

Following a period of patchy timber availability and high prices, we began to work directly with farmers and landowners. This enabled a series of smaller felling projects and fairer wood prices for us and the farmers we worked with.

2022

Having dabbled in the hardwood firewood market for a couple of years, we invested in the best processing equipment and people and began selling kiln dried firewood directly to domestic customers in and around Edinburgh.

2024

Pentland Biomass is one of the largest kiln dried hardwood firewood suppliers in Scotland. Our logs are certified as Ready To Burn and we enjoy providing high quality, sustainably sourced, local logs around the city and surrounds.
